Role Overview

## Role Overview We are seeking a Senior SQL DBA Technical Lead to lead Microsoft SQL Server database administration, production support, operational governance, and database service delivery for the BC Hydro database management scope. The role requires strong hands-on SQL Server expertise combined with technical leadership, advanced troubleshooting, performance optimization, high availability, disaster recovery, and enterprise production support capabilities. The successful candidate will work closely with application, infrastructure, security, compliance, vendor, and customer teams while ensuring database services meet operational standards, SLAs, security requirements, and reliability expectations. ## Key Responsibilities - Lead end-to-end Microsoft SQL Server DBA operations, technical delivery, and L2/L3 production support. - Administer SQL Server environments including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, migrations, cloning, database refreshes, SQL Agent jobs, storage planning, and capacity management. - Manage high availability and disaster recovery environments using Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances, log shipping, replication, and database mirroring where applicable. - Plan, validate, and support backup and recovery operations including full, differential, and transaction log backups, restore testing, point-in-time recovery, and disaster recovery exercises. - Monitor database health, availability, performance, storage, jobs, alerts, wait statistics, blocking, deadlocks, and logs. - Perform SQL Server performance tuning using execution plans, index and statistics analysis, query optimization, wait analysis, and memory, CPU, and I/O trend analysis. - Troubleshoot production incidents including availability issues, backup failures, transaction log growth, storage capacity issues, SQL Agent failures, connectivity problems, and authentication issues. - Support database security, access management, auditing, encryption awareness, vulnerability remediation, and compliance controls. - Coordinate incident and change resolution with application, infrastructure, backup, Windows/Unix, security, vendor, and customer stakeholder teams. - Lead technical reviews, guide DBA team members, perform peer reviews, support task allocation, and ensure adherence to SOPs and SLA commitments. - Participate in incident, problem, service request, change, release, and knowledge management processes. - Create and maintain runbooks, SOPs, architecture notes, implementation plans, deployment procedures, DR evidence, RCA documents, release notes, and knowledge articles. ## Project Goals - Maintain reliable and highly available enterprise SQL Server database services supporting mission-critical operations. - Improve database performance, stability, capacity management, backup/recovery readiness, and disaster recovery capabilities. - Provide strong technical leadership across DBA operations while meeting service-level, governance, security, and compliance requirements. - Drive effective production incident resolution, root-cause analysis, operational standardization, and continuous improvement.
